Kenneth Whisenton | Councilman- At-Large

Community Advocate | Servant Leader

Kenneth Whisenton is a devoted public servant, corporate banker, and a resident of Gary, Indiana, where he proudly serves as Councilman-at-Large. With a deep commitment to faith, family, and community, Kenneth leads with integrity, vision, and an unshakable belief in the power of people to shape their city’s future. His work is centered on building a stronger, more equitable Gary—block by block, neighbor by neighbor.

Kenneth’s background in community development banking has uniquely equipped him to understand the economic and social challenges facing urban communities. Over the years, he has assisted in securing millions of dollars in banking capital and grants helping families secure homeownership, supported small businesses in accessing capital, and worked to expand financial literacy across underserved areas. His experience in the banking sector brings both financial expertise and a practical, solutions-driven mindset to his role on the council.

As Councilman-at-Large, Kenneth advocates for policies that promote infrastructure investment, workforce development, neighborhood stabilization, and youth opportunity. Whether pushing for cleaner streets, better housing, or more responsive city services, he approaches every issue with humility and a desire to serve—not to be served. Known for his accessibility and down-to-earth approach, Kenneth often says, “I may wear a suit to City Hall, but I’m just as comfortable in boots and jeans, walking the blocks with residents.”

Beyond politics, Kenneth is an Eagle Scout, outdoorsman, and mentor who has spent much of his life teaching young people skills like gardening, fishing, and basic carpentry—passing on the values of self-reliance and stewardship that were instilled in him at a young age. He is a proud husband and new father, and his greatest joy comes from leading a life that honors God while investing in the next generation.

Kenneth Whisenton believes that leadership isn’t about titles or power—it’s about showing up, doing the work, and leaving a legacy rooted in service. With a clear-eyed focus on progress and a heart committed to his hometown, he continues to be a steadfast advocate for the people of Gary and a champion of hope for what the city can become.
