Councilwoman Mary Brown has served as the 3rd District Councilwoman for the City of Gary for over 20 years. She also serves as Chair of the City Council’s Finance Committee. As 3rd District Councilwoman, she has hosted numerous community forums to keep her constituents informed about developments throughout the city.

She is an honor graduate of Emerson High School and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology as well as a Bachelor of Science in Management. A long-time member of New Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, she has served on the Board of Trustees and is also a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

Councilwoman Brown retired from U.S. Steel after many years as a Cost Analyst and later worked as Customer Service Manager at the Gary Sanitary District (GSD) for several years.

She is actively involved with several professional organizations, including the National League of Cities (NLC), the Indiana Association of Cities & Towns (IACT), Accelerate Indiana Municipalities (AIM), and the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials (NBC-LEO). Over the years, she has been the recipient of many awards for her service.

In 2013, she served as President of the National League of Cities Women in Municipal Government (NLC/WIMG) and proudly hosted the WIMG Annual Summer Conference, which was held in Gary and Chicago.
